What Volunteers Do

SCRIBE – 1 person per shift 
Sits with the judge and transcribes the score and comments for each movement of the dressage test.
Notes: Should be someone with experience or familiarity with the job with good handwriting

SCORERS – 2 people per shift 
Calculates the percentage score (dressage) or number of penalties (CT dressage) for the completed dressage tests
Notes: Calculates the percentage score (dressage) or number of penalties (CT dressage) for the completed dressage tests

RING STEWARDS – 2+ people per shift 
Keeps track of the schedule, marking the riders in the warmup and currently in the show ring, informs riders about how many riders are ahead of them in the order of go/how much time they have/when they are on deck

SHOW MANAGER – 1 person per shift 
Facilitates the check in process, posts the scores and the placings, double checks the scores, hands out ribbons after the class is finished
Notes: Preferably an adult with show experience

RUNNERS – 1+ person per shift 
Picks up finished tests from the judge’s booth and delivers them to the scorers

Jumping – In addition to those positions needed for Dressage

JUMP JUDGE – 1+ person per shift 
Sits in judge’s booth and watches the jumping rounds for CT and Jumper classes. Keeps track of how many penalties are accrued during each ride. Keeps track of the time during jumper class jump offs
Notes: Should read provided jump judging guidelines and understand them prior to volunteering in this position.

JUMP CREW – 4+ people per shift 
Resets jumps between rounds (ie. Ensures all poles are securely in the cups, that groundlines have not been moved, and that jumps are still safe). Adjusts the jumps for each level of competition.
Notes: Should be physically in fairly good shape, be extremely familiar with the course and its changes for each level. Should be aware of potential jumping hazards in the ring (rocks, trash, pole rolled out)

RING STEWARDS – 2+ people per shift 
Keeps track of the schedule, marking the riders in the warmup and currently in the show ring, informs riders about how many riders are ahead of them in the order of go/how much time they have/when they are on deck
Notes: There is typically a ring steward for each warm up ring and each show ring, such guidance is flexible if the warmup and show ring are very close to each other. Does not require experience

CT MANAGER – 0+ Optional but very helpful 
Ensures that the jump judge, and jump crew are aware of how the course is intended to ride, the course, and the adjustments made for each level
Notes: Preferably an adult with show experience

RUNNERS – 1+ people per shift 
Picks up finished jump judge’s forms from the judge’s booth and delivers them to the scorers
Notes: Excellent job for younger kids who need volunteer hours!
